Malanka
Malanka
Join us in January for the Society’s annual Malanka event, a vibrant celebration of Ukrainian New Year! We transform a large banquet hall into a festive space filled with Ukrainian culture and tradition. Last year, we featured an exhibit from the University of Alberta on Ukrainian history and immigration. Our talented dancers performed a lively and colourful series of dances, while the emcee shared stories about the history and meaning behind the costumes and dances. A small choir led traditional carols, adding to the joyous atmosphere. The evening also includes a delicious supper with Ukrainian favourites such as perogies and cabbage rolls, followed by a DJ dance. It’s truly one of the best family events of the year!
Fort McMurray, a community of about 75,000 people located 450 kilometres north of Edmonton, Alberta, is home to residents from all over Canada, the United States, and the world, many of whom have moved here for opportunities in the Oil Sands Industry. The Ukrainian Cultural Society provides a welcoming space for connection and community. At Malanka, our attendees (about 250 people) have the chance to join a larger community and learn about Ukrainian Canadian culture and dance in a northern Canadian setting.
Malanka is more than just a celebration; it’s a reflection of our community’s resilience and spirit. In the wake of the 2016 Horse River Wildfire, our values of supporting one another, celebrating, and remembering together have only strengthened. This event brings together members, their families, friends, and the wider community to honour the past and welcome the New Year with joy. Through Malanka, we share our culture and our love of dance and show how our society has grown and evolved over the years.
